Sanford Art Walk

Take a Stroll on the Sanford Art Walk

Greetings Art Lovers!

Sanford Art Walk is all about enjoying an evening of fresh art and making connections with the artists who create it. This month’s free event showcases wood carving at Jeanine Taylor Folk Art, watercolors at Gallery on First, and a group show at the Historic Sanford Welcome Center.

The gallery will be jumpin’ at Jeanine Taylor Folk Art, thanks in part to the subject matter of visiting artist Lavon Williams, Jr. The premier of his new collection, “Rise and Fly”, will feature low relief carvings around the theme of jazz music. When you view LaVon’s work, it’s as if you are looking at a paused action frame ready to restart at any moment. His carvings are energetic with the physical motion of a jazz club paired with an emotive verve deeply rooted in love. Earlier in the day, Lavon will perform a carving demonstration that is open to the public, Saturday, September 15 from 12-1 PM. Join us to meet one of the towering figures in Southern folk art.

At Gallery on First, the featured artist is Charlie Ramos. His collection of new watercolors is “Places Remembered and Lived In” and will evoke memories from his favorite haunts in Northern Minnesota. Charlie’s intimate paintings invite you to look closely at a slice of woodland forest, a winter sky, or an inviting pond. Watch the seasons change through the lens of Charlie’s Minnesota cabin window. Step into Studio 7 and you can travel to other places without a plane ticket!

Just across 1st Street is where the Art Walk got its start, at the Historic Sanford Welcome Center. A juried art show with the theme “All Things Considered” will be on display. Artists will be submitting work in their favorite media of their favorite subject matter. Visitors are invited to cast a vote for the “People’s Choice” award and help select the lucky recipient of a $50 cash prize. A judges’ panel selects the “Best of Show” and awards the winner with a $100 cash prize. Musical performances always enliven the event.

And you’ll be able to fuel up before you stroll, as the Art Walk coincides with the Food Truck Fiesta at the corner of Palmetto and 2nd Street. We’ll see you in Historic Downtown Sanford!
